est. 2020
Over the last four years I have developed my photogravure printing skills at Zygote Press as a resident artist, and have learned much from other resident artists and visiting international artists. Before the shutdown, I had been in the shop printing almost every week for three years. I had started teaching the polymer plate photogravure printing process at Zygote in workshops and in one-on-one instruction. Closures and restrictions on shop access, plus being unable to print for long periods during the shutdown have been particularly challenging for me.

For these reasons, I have established OAK LEAF PRESS, a fine art printing studio located in Aurora, Ohio. OAK LEAF PRESS is a registered trade name in the State of Ohio and will operate as a part of Bob Herbst Photography, which was established in 2001. I converted my photography studio into an intaglio print shop complete with a 30x50 Charles Brand etching press, intaglio work table, and associated accessories, many of which were re-purposed from my darkroom. Pre-press facilities, where I make my printing plates, were already in the basement of my studio.

The primary focus of OAK LEAF PRESS will be printing my own creative work, but I will also be available for private teaching, provide printing services for other artists, and offer prints from public domain images. I will continue to be a resident artist at Zygote Press, to be represented by Zygote’s gallery, and to teach there when in-person instruction can resume.

The journey continues.
